Developing Learning Activities through Blended Learning to Enhance Innovation skills of Student Teachers in Elementary Education

Abstract

          This study was conducted using the research and development (R&D) process, and its objectives were (1) to study the current conditions and needs in developing learning activities using a blended learning approach; (2) to develop learning activities using a blended learning approach; and (3) to explore students’ opinions on blended learning activities to enhance student teachers’ innovation skills. The participants consisted of 50 student teachers in Elementary Education of Suan Dusit University, selected by using purposive sampling method.

          Research instruments included (1) a needs assessment questionnaire, (2) the developed blended learning activity set, (3) an innovation skills assessment form, and (4) a student opinion questionnaire. The learning activities comprised three components: an orientation session, principles of creating mathematical learning media for elementary teachers, and the creation of innovative learning media (board games), with a total learning duration of 15 hours. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test.

          The results revealed that student teachers needed blended learning activities that integrated face-to-face and digital learning to foster creativity and innovation. After participating in the activities, their posttest scores (M = 3.12, SD = 0.361) were significantly higher than their pretest scores (M = 2.76, SD = 2.77) at the .05 level (W = 1176, p < .001). Moreover, students expressed highly positive opinions toward the developed activities.
