Thailand is entering a fully aged society amidst growing mental health challenges among the elderly, particularly depression, loneliness, and social isolation. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the situation, trends, risk factors, and mental health care approaches for the elderly in Thailand and in countries with long-standing experience in this field—namely Japan, Italy, and Scandinavian nations (with a focus on Sweden).
The findings reveal that despite differences in health systems and sociocultural contexts, all countries emphasize reducing social isolation, empowering communities, integrating mental health services, and utilizing digital technology to enhance accessibility. Notable models include Community Cafés and the Dementia Supporter Caravan in Japan, Community Mental Health Centres (CMHCs) in Italy, and Sweden’s Senior Alert database and the Nortraeije integrated care model—all of which offer valuable insights adaptable to the Thai context.
Policy recommendations highlight the need for a community-based approach, intersectoral integration between central and local agencies, and mobilization of community health volunteers such as village health workers (Aor Sor Mor). Additionally, blending modern innovations with religious and cultural systems—such as engaging Buddhist monks in mental health support—can sustainably enhance the mental well-being and quality of life of Thailand’s elderly population.
