Identity of Supernatural Beings in the Thai-Khmer Ethnic Group: A Case Study of the Ban Sawai in Sawai Subdistrict, Mueang District, Surin Province

Abstract

This qualitative study delves into the cultural identity and beliefs of the Thai-Khmer ethnic group in Surin Province, with a specific focus on their perspectives concerning supernatural entities. The research was conducted within the Ban Sawai community, located in the Mueang District of Surin Province. Key informants for this study consisted of 11 individuals, and data collection methods included in-depth interviews and group discussions. The study's findings unveil a diverse tapestry of beliefs, rituals, traditions, ways of life, and distinctive attire within the Ban Sawai community. These cultural elements not only serve as markers of the community's identity but also form an intricate structural system closely intertwined with their belief systems. The research explores various aspects, such as the cultural identity of the Thai-Khmer ethnic group, their interactions with spirits, superstitious beliefs, the significance of talismans, and the role of Priyaphumsarae – spirits believed to inhabit rice fields and influence agricultural practices and products. This investigation provides valuable insights into the cultural and spiritual dimensions of the Thai-Khmer community in Surin Province.
