Abstract

This study aims (1) to systematically synthesize the body of knowledge and research trends concerning sustainability and adaptive capacity of social enterprises, and (2) to identify existing knowledge gaps while proposing an integrated conceptual framework that links

sustainability and adaptive capacity as dynamic capabilities to support the development of social enterprises in rapidly changing environments. The study adopts a systematic literature review (SLR) approach based on the PRISMA framework, drawing upon data collected from Scopus, Web of Science, and ThaiJO databases during the period 2010–2024. The analysis is complemented by bibliometric analysis to examine research patterns and thematic developments.

The synthesis of knowledge reveals that social enterprises have evolved toward integrating economic, social, and adaptive capacity dimensions. However, the existing knowledge gap still lies in the lack of a conceptual framework that practically links sustainability with the capacity to adapt to change, particularly in the context of developing countries. An integrated conceptual framework that explains the relationships among sustainability dimensions, adaptive capacity mechanisms, and institutional contexts. The framework provides practical implications for policy formulation and managerial practices in enhancing the long-term viability of social enterprises. Furthermore, the study contributes to the literature by highlighting the need for integrated conceptual development, context-sensitive analytical tools, and interdisciplinary research approaches to support sustainable social enterprise development. Strategic implications are also provided to guide policy and management at both organizational and national levels.
