Approaches to the Sustainable Development for Community Enterprises: A Case Study of the Nan Rice and Fruit Processing Group

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to 1) examine the context of a community enterprise, 2) identify problems and operational obstacles, and 3) study approaches for the sustainable development of community enterprises. The case study focuses on the NAN Rice and Fruit Processing Group. Data were collected from 15 key informants selected through purposive sampling, using in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and non-participant observation. The data were analyzed through content analysis and presented descriptively.

              The study found that the community enterprise was established in 2012 and operates in three main areas: 1) processed fish products, 2) processed rice and cereal products, and 3) processed fruit products. The problems and obstacles include members’ lack of knowledge in online marketing and rising production costs. The sustainable development of the community enterprise can be approached through 6 key areas as follows: 1) organizational management, 2) product and innovation development, 3) marketing and market access, 4) capacity building for members, 5) enhancement of product standards, and 6) sustainability in economic, social, and environmental dimensions. To ensure the sustainability of the community enterprise, it generates income for its members and local residents, thereby supporting the community. If the enterprise operates profitably, it will enhance the community’s capacity for self-reliance and self-management based on the philosophy of sufficiency economy.
