An Analysis of Janek Gwizdala’ s Songs to Compose Contemporary Jazz

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze Janek Gwizdala’s songs for improvising the contemporary jazz. It was found that the Light Years song provided the musical form as AB or Binary Form in the D minor scale. The intro chord was Dm | F | C | Gm, Dm F | Edim Dm for the part A, and | Bb C | D for the part B. In addition, the improvisational part had the similar chord as Bbmaj | C | Dm, but as Gm in the last two bars. The main melody was played by the electric bass. It was found that the improvisational melody was embedded in the major scale, the minor scale, pentatonic scale, altered scale, and the symmetrical scale. The notes frequently used were the 8th note, 16th note, quarter note, and chord performance.
Secondly, the King Slayer song was improvised under the concepts of the chord and melody generation and the improvisational performance. These mentioned concepts were derived from the analysis of the Light Years song of Janek Gwizdala, and integrated with the composer’s inspiration from the League of Legend Game.
The song King Slayer was composed for the purposes of the research. It is a song that has the musical characteristics of popular music that can be improvised.
