Mahori Isan Ensemble: A Case Study of Ban Toei Band, Suwannaphum District, Roi Et Province

Abstract

This research study aims to 1) explore the condition of the Isan folk band 2) examine the identity of Isan folk band. 3) study the role in the community of the Isan folk band. Purposive sample was an expert who knows Isan folk band and stakeholders in Isan folk band. The scope of the study was in Ban Toei, Thung Kula Subdistrict, Suvarnabhumi District, Roi Et Province. Data was collected by observation and interview methods. Data analysis was qualitative and presentation in the form of description.  

          The research results showed that the Ban Toei Isan folk band was formed by Teacher Auy Phitpeng in 1957. Teacher Auy Phitpeng traveled to study the Thai Pi Paat and the Korat folk from the institute of Mr.Li Srisang which he also preferred practicing more about the Korat folk band. During the year 1962, he formed the Isan folk band in Ban Toei, and there are 3 generations have inherited music. However, music inheritance has been decreased due to the old age of musicians and other performance popularity. There is a unique song such as Mia Noi - Mia Luang song which has been passed down to play alternately. There is a large pipe called ‘Pi Kong’ and a small pipe called ‘Pi Tat’ including various sizes of Sor. The role of the community of the Isan folk band showed that Kru Auy has a big role in a community as a cultural leader which the people in the community highly respect and support their local folk band.
