Creative Performance Techniques and Song for the Four-String and Five-String SAW at Phatyakul House, Khlong San District

Abstract

This research investigates "Creative Approaches to Performance Techniques and Compositions for Four-string and Five-string Saw: A Case Study of Phatyakul House, Khlong San District." The study explores the reformation of Thai music through physical innovations, specifically the detached bow system and arched bridge, which enhance dynamic control and string-crossing precision. Technical advancements include perfect-fifth tuning and vertical fingering, expanding the instrumental range and enabling complex melodies and double-stop harmonies.

In composition and orchestration, the five-string Saw provides a sonic foundation while the four-string Saw executes main and counter-melodies, moving beyond traditional unison toward multi-dimensional part-writing. The researcher composed three arrangements—Bulan Loi Luean, Plapphla Chai, and Phan Farang—blending Thai ornamentation with Western tonal precision and chordal structures. Additionally, a specialized notation system was developed to formalize the transmission of these techniques. This work represents a significant innovation, expanding the boundaries of Thai instruments toward international standards while preserving the Phatyakul House heritage.
