Soeng Pamee: Developing the Knowledge Transmission Process of the Ban Khwao Ikat Cloth Dance in Roi Et Province to Enhance Social Value and Create Economic Value Added.

Abstract

This study aimed to 1) investigate the knowledge, wisdom, and transmission process of the Senng Pha Mee (Ban Khwao Handwoven Silk Dance) in Ban Khwao, Selaphum District, Roi Et Province, and 2) develop approaches or models for transmitting the Senng Pha Mee wisdom that could enhance social value and generate economic added value for the community. The informants were divided into three specific groups: 1) the knowledge holders, consisting of 10 people, including local sages, elders, monks, teachers, independent scholars, and community leaders; 2) practitioners, including 30 people from the local heritage preservation groups, Senng Pha Mee performers, and weavers; and 3) 10 general public individuals from Roi Et Province who were associated with Saket Nakhon. This research employed a qualitative cultural approach. Data were collected using surveys, interviews, observations, focus group discussions, and workshops.

The findings revealed that 1) the Senng Pha Mee reflected the community’s cultural identity and its connection with the traditional handwoven silk craftsmanship. Its knowledge comprised dance movements that mimicked the weaving process, local musical rhythms, costumes made of handwoven silk, and performance styles that reflected community life. The transmission of this knowledge primarily occurred through local sages, cultural teachers, and community leaders to the youth via cultural activities, rehearsals, and traditional festival performances. 2) The approaches for developing the transmission process emphasized community participation, learning and training activities for the youth, integration of cultural knowledge with education and cultural tourism, and adaptation of performance styles to contemporary contexts while preserving the original identity. Promoting Senng Pha Mee alongside the dissemination of handwoven silk products enhanced local pride, strengthened the community, and increased economic value through tourism and the sale of cultural products sustainably.
