DEVELOPING ANALYTICAL READING SKILLS IN THAI LITERATURE THROUGH THE SIX THINKING HATS TECHNIQUE FOR MATHAYOM SUKSA YEAR 5 STUDENTS AT THE DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL OF NAKHON RATCHASIMA RAJABHAT UNIVERSITY (SECONDARY DIVISION)

Abstract

This research aimed to: 1) study the effects of developing analytical reading ability in Thai literature through the Six Thinking Hats technique, and 2) compare the results of using the Six Thinking Hats technique with the assessment criteria for analytical reading skills in Thai literature. The target group consisted of 75 Mathayom Suksa Year 2 students in the academic year 2023 at the Demonstration School of Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University (Secondary Division). The instruments used in this study included instructional plans and a test, both of which were validated for content validity, difficulty index, and discrimination index by experts in Thai language education.

The data analysis and presentation were conducted in three phases. Phase 1 involved analyzing the conditions and causes of problems using post-teaching reflection records, midterm test results, and interviews. Phase 2 focused on developing the instructional innovation and analyzing the congruence of the lesson plans and the test. Phase 3 implemented the innovation to develop students’ analytical reading skills and examined the number of students who did not meet the expected criteria, along with the reasons for their performance. The research findings were as follows:

1. The key issue that required improvement was students’ analytical reading skills in Thai literature. The cause stemmed from a lack of training in identifying components of literary works, interpretation, and relationship analysis.
2. The content validity indices of the instructional plans and test were 0.82 and 0.87, respectively. The difficulty index was 0.52, indicating appropriate difficulty, and the discrimination index was positive, confirming the effectiveness and suitability of the tools.
3. The implementation of the Six Thinking Hats technique resulted in improved student learning outcomes, with 92 percent achieving the expected level of analytical reading ability.
