Jazz music is a genre that originated from African-American culture in the early 20th century, characterized by its distinctive rhythm, improvisation, and expressive freedom. This academic article aims to examine the role and development of jazz music within the context of Thai education, covering its historical introduction to Thailand, its progression within educational institutions, and its integration into music curricula at both secondary and higher education levels. Drawing on relevant research, the article demonstrates how jazz plays a vital role in enhancing students’ analytical thinking, creativity, and cultural development.
The findings reveal that jazz music significantly contributes to students’ potential in areas such as listening skills, communication, teamwork, and, most notably, the cultivation of cultural diversity awareness. This involves being open to musical expressions from diverse roots, recognizing and respecting different perspectives, performance styles, and cultural contexts—ultimately fostering a global mindset and nurturing global citizenship through the art of musical expression.
However, several challenges remain, including a lack of specialized jazz educators and insufficient policy support from the government. The article concludes by proposing sustainable strategies to promote jazz music in the Thai education system, including curriculum development, international networking, and raising public awareness of the educational value of jazz in the 21st century.
