The objectives of this research article are: 1) to study the beliefs associated with the worship of Thao Wessuwan, and 2) to create a conservative Thai performing arts production. The study focuses on the conceptual beliefs regarding three manifestations of Thao Wessuwan: Pang Brahma Sutithep, Pang Thepbutra Sutithep, and Pang Manut. High-level Phleng Na Phat (sacred music) dance movements were utilized to create this conservative Thai dance performance. The research methodology includes a review of literature and existing research, along with an analysis of Thai classical dance movements to design the performance.
The research results reveal that the creation of this Thai classical dance performance is rooted in the Buddhist beliefs surrounding the worship of Thao Wessuwan, who is revered as a powerful deity capable of exorcising evil spirits and as the god of wealth. These beliefs drive various worship practices aimed at achieving success based on individual faith. In this creative process, the researcher applied principles of artistic composition and Motion Theory, incorporating both balanced and unbalanced physical movements. The choreography was developed by studying and adapting three high-level Phleng Na Phat (sacred music) compositions: Phleng Thep Damnoen, Phleng Tra Mongkhon Chakkrawan, and Phleng Rua Sam La.The core concept of the performance portrays the journey of Thao Wessuwan to the human realm to bestow blessings upon his devotees and demonstrate his divine power to ward off evil. The researcher also designed original costumes and headdresses (Siraphorn) based on the sculptural characteristics of the three manifestations of Thao Wessuwan. This included designing stage formations and choreography involving performance props. The creative work was evaluated and verified by experts in Thai classical dance (specifically the Tua Phra or male protagonist role) according to established criteria. Consequently, the research successfully achieved all its objectives and has been disseminated to the public.
