Abstract

This academic article examines the patterns of network formation and social spaces between local politicians and business actors through the conceptual framework of Social Space and Capital developed by Pierre Bourdieu, in conjunction with Social Network Theory. The article aims to explain the dynamics of relationships, interactions, and power negotiations among key actors operating within local political and economic arenas. In contemporary societies, local governance and economic development increasingly rely on interconnected networks that facilitate the exchange of resources, influence, and opportunities among diverse stakeholders. The article argues that social space serves as an arena in which actors compete, cooperate, and negotiate their positions through the mobilization of various forms of capital, including economic, social, cultural, and symbolic capital. Within this context, local politicians and business actors establish and maintain networks through both formal and informal relationships. These networks are embedded in a variety of social spaces, such as local administrative organizations, business associations, educational institutions, community organizations, public events, cultural activities, and kinship systems. Such spaces provide opportunities for trust-building, resource exchange, and the accumulation of strategic advantages. From a Bourdieusian perspective, the relationship between local politicians and business actors extends beyond collaborative efforts for local development. It also reflects struggles over power, legitimacy, and social positioning within the local field. While these networks can contribute positively to economic growth, community development, and resource mobilization, they may simultaneously reinforce unequal power relations, facilitate preferential access to public resources, and reproduce existing structures of domination. Understanding the formation of networks and the operation of social spaces is therefore crucial for explaining local political processes and governance dynamics. The article concludes that promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusive participation is essential for ensuring that local political-business networks contribute to sustainable and equitable development. The body of knowledge from the study reveals three main themes: 1) the concept of a networked field of power, 2) the concept of capital conversion and power formation, and 3) the concept of dual dynamics of local networks.
