Abstract

This academic article examines the role of the Buddhist principle of harmony (Samaggi-dhamma) in fostering a culture of community forest conservation in Yasothon Province, Thailand. The article aims to explain how Buddhist teachings contribute to environmental awareness, collective responsibility, and community participation in the sustainable management of natural resources. Drawing upon Buddhist philosophy, community-based resource management, and the socio-cultural context of community forest conservation, the article explores the relationship between moral values and environmental stewardship. The principle of harmony emphasizes unity, cooperation, mutual respect, and collective responsibility among community members. These values encourage individuals to prioritize the common good, comply with community regulations, and actively participate in the protection and sustainable use of forest resources. When applied to community forest management, this principle strengthens environmental consciousness, promotes a sense of shared ownership, and enhances the capacity of local communities to prevent forest encroachment and resource degradation. The article argues that a culture of forest conservation cannot be achieved solely through legal enforcement or governmental regulations. Rather, it emerges through the cultivation of shared values, social cohesion, and public consciousness within the community. In this regard, the Buddhist principle of harmony functions as a cultural mechanism that connects religion, community, and environmental conservation. Such integration contributes to sustainable natural resource management, strengthens community resilience, and promotes a balanced relationship between humans and nature. The article concludes that the application of Buddhist principles in environmental management offers a valuable approach to fostering sustainable conservation practices and reinforcing community participation in local resource governance. The experience of community forest conservation in Yasothon Province highlights the significance of moral and cultural foundations in achieving long-term environmental sustainability.
