Bodhi Tree: Center of Buddhists in Prachin Buri Province

Abstract

This article aims to study the meaning, significance, and role of the Bodhi tree as a spiritual center for Buddhists in Prachinburi province. The Bodhi tree is a tree that Buddhists respect, have faith in, and believe in its sacredness. It is the tree which the Buddha attained enlightenment under the shade of it at Bodh Gaya, India, which was the beginning of Buddhism and the symbolics of wisdom and awakening. Therefore, Bodhi trees are planted and revered in temples throughout Thailand. Particularly in Prachinburi province, where a sacred Bodhi tree is located at Wat Ton Pho Sri Maha Bodhi, Kok Pip Sub-district, Sri Mahosot District, a place of significant spiritual and ceremonial importance to the community. This study found that the Bodhi tree plays a significant role in religious rituals, serving as a spiritual focal point for Buddhists and symbolizing a profound connection between Dharma and daily life. It also reflects the long-standing culture and beliefs of the local community, as the tree is used as a meeting place and for various religious activities, which helps foster relationships and unity within the community. The study results highlight the need for the sustainable conservation of the Bodhi tree to promote the preservation of Buddhist faith and identity in Prachinburi province. This article is hoped to be useful for the study and preservation of this important cultural heritage.
