Abstract

This study aimed to 1) develop the SMART-LEARN instructional model, 2) examine its efficiency based on the 80/80 criterion, and 3) compare students’ 21st century learning skills before and after the implementation of the model. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach integrated with a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 116 students selected through cluster sampling. The research instruments included SMART-LEARN-based lesson plans, an achievement test, a 21st century skills assessment, and a student satisfaction questionnaire, all of which were validated for content validity and reliability. Data were collected through pretest, instructional intervention, and posttest, and analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, efficiency index (E1/E2), and dependent t-test.
The results revealed that: 1) the SMART-LEARN Model comprised ten core components and demonstrated the highest level of appropriateness (x̄ = 4.72, S.D. = 0.41); 2) the model achieved an efficiency of 82.35/84.12, meeting the established 80/80 criterion; and 3) students’ 21st century learning skills after the implementation were significantly higher than those before the intervention at the .05 level (t = 12.45, p < .05), particularly in teamwork and communication. The findings indicate that the SMART-LEARN Model effectively enhances essential 21st century competencies and provides a viable instructional innovation for improving educational quality in contemporary learning contexts.
