Development Model of Silver Handicrafts through Community Participation at Wat Sri Suphan, Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract

This research article aimed to 1) study the problems of silver handicrafts in the Wat Sri Suphan community; 2) develop silver handicrafts through community participation; and 3) propose a model for sustainable silver handicraft development through community participation. This qualitative, action research methodology was conducted with 17 key informants through structured and unstructured interviews and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using descriptive content analysis.

The findings revealed:

1. The main problems of silver handicrafts in the Wat Sri Suphan community include declining consumer popularity, a lack of adaptability to new consumer behaviors, a shortage of new skilled craftsmen, high production costs, and limited marketing channels.
2. The process of handicraft development through community participation, such as group discussions, workshops, and the transfer of historical and technical knowledge, has resulted in an awareness of the value of local wisdom, the creation of new products, the preservation of handicraft identity, and the sustainable economic strengthening of the community.

3. Three models of silver handicraft development are identified: 1) the conservation and continuation of local wisdom model to preserve Lanna silversmiths; and 2) the creative development model. To adapt traditional patterns and techniques to be consistent with the times and 3) the economic promotion model and community mechanisms to create economic stability and fair income distribution. These three processes integrate cultural, economic and social dimensions in a balanced manner under the participation of all sectors in the community, leading to the preservation and sustainable development of Lanna silverware handicrafts.
