A STUDY OF THE VALUES OF MAHAVESSANTARA JATAKA TRADITION INFLUENCING TO WAT PA KLUAY COMMUNITY, SATHAN SUB-DISTRICT, NA NOI DISTRICT, NAN PROVINCE

Abstract

This study aimed to 1. study Vessantara Jataka Tradition of Wat Pa Kluay Community, Sathan Sub-district, Na Noi District, Nan Province and 2. analyze the value of Vessantara Jataka tradition influencing Wat Pa Kluay Community, Sathan Sub-district, Na Noi District, Nan Province. Applying qualitative research methods by documentary and in-depth interview was conducted with 25 key informants.

The findings were as follows, Vessantara Jataka tradition of Wat Pa Kluay Community, Sathan Sub-district, Na Noi District, Nan Province was based on perfection of giving of Vessantara, the previous life of Buddha before he achieved enlightenment. The sermon of Prince Vessantara is celebrated annually during Loy Kratong festival. It was regarded as one of traditions transmitted from the past time accompanied by public participation. listening to 13 chapters of Maha Vessantara Jataka preaching was considered meritmaking that brings people more fruitfulness; they hold the reincarnation belief that they will be born during the Arimeiteiya Bhura era. Also, it was meritmaking according to the principles of bass of meritorious action. Vessantara Jataka tradition represented the community’s identities as well as the wellorganized system concerning time, place, and man. The preaching rhythm of Vessantara Jataka was unique. The value of Vessantara Jataka tradition influencing Pa Kluay community was divided in 5 aspects. 1.The value of beliefs. 2. The value of teaching. 3. Social value. 4. Family value and 5. Cultural and traditional values.
