ANALYSIS OF HIRI-OTTAPPA TO PROMOTE ANTI-CORRUPTION GUIDELINES WITHIN ORGANIZATION

Abstract

          The purposes of this study were 1) to investigate Hiriotapa (ashame and fear of conduct sins) in Buddhist scriptures; 2) to study the enhancement of business ethics within business organizations; and 3) to analyze Hiriotapa to promote anti-corruption guidelines within business organizations. Applying the documentary research method, the related documents and research were analyzed to propose anti-corruption guidelines within business organizations. The results showed that Hiri-Ottappa referred to guardians of the world. These principles protect and restrain individuals from doing evil by enhancing business ethics to promote business policies and performance, considered harmony between economy and ethics. It also enhances the professional code of conducts to build social credibility and trust. Hiriottappa plays a vital role in promoting anti-corruption within business organizations since Hiri refers to the innate sense of shame over moral transgression, and Ottappa means fear of the results of wrongdoing. Guidelines for promoting anti-corruption within business organizations are as follows. 1) For executives, they should act with honesty, transparency, fairness, and prioritize the common good. 2) For employees, they should feel ashamed of unethical behavior, follow rules and regulations, and protect the organization’s assets. 3) For business organizations, they should establish codes of ethics, implement anti-corruption control systems, and operate with accountability to ensure long-term sustainability.
