ANUPUPPIKATHA AND THE ENLIGHTENMENT IN BUDDHISM

Abstract

          This article described the Aubupapikathā and the enlightenment of Dharma in Buddhism. Anupupapikatha is a sermon found in Buddhist scriptures expounded by the Buddha. The exposition of Aubupapikathā is a gradual dhamma that aimes to thoroughly clean and polish the listener's discretion until their mind is permanently calm without hindrances, leading to a thorough understanding of the Buddha's Dharma.  The Buddha exposition of Aubupapikathā consisted of Dāna-kathā,  Sīla-kathā, Sagga-kathā, Kāmādīnava-kathā, and Nekkhammānisamsa-kathā. After Buddha expounded the Aubupapikathā, if listeners could get rid of all their defilement, he expounded the Four Noble Truhts until they acquired a certain level of Dharma. Anupuppikatha 5 and the Four Noble Truhts are the Dharma that the Buddha expounded the most, called "Pahūlānusāsanī". The exposition of Aubupapikathā aimes to polish the listener's mind. However, during his exposition, all verses were not required, depending on the listeners. The Buddha expounded Anupuppikatha for the first time to Yasakulabutta, the son of a wealthy man in Paranasi City, until he attained enlightenment. Subsequently, he requested ordination as a Buddhist monk.
